Our Upcoming Evening Program

The Board of Directors invites you to join us for the April 27, 2005, PMI-NEIC Evening Program! And, they did it again! The BOD voted to allow NEIC members, who bring one guest, to attend for free! Your guest is free too! Remember to indicate the name of your guest in the comments area of the registration form so we may plan the appropriate number of meals.

Dave Maynard, Vice President of Professional Development for the NEIC, and Greg McCormick, President of the Hoosier Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (HC-STC), will present "The Intersection of Project Management and Technical Communication - Understanding Professional Practices".

Much of the business activity being conducted today takes the form of projects. What can project managers learn about the value of having a technical communications professional on their project team?

Correspondingly, many of the information materials being created today are important enough to take on project-level status. What can technical communicators learn about the value of using formal project management techniques for their activities?

This informative meeting describes the strengths and business value of each profession, exposing members of each group to the skills and best practices of the other. During the program, Maynard and McCormick will explain what each group needs to know about the other, including:

  • General technical communications activities and deliverables
  • Specific documents that support project teams and their activities
  • Standard phases of project management activity
  • Major inputs and outputs of each project phase

Whether you want to increase your understanding of project management techniques or of technical communications activities and deliverables, you'll learn a lot from this joint presentation.

Our evening meal includes: Parmesan Crusted Chicken, Waldorf Salad, Whipped Potatoes, Corn O'Brien, Turtle Cheesecake

  • If you are bringing a guest, please indicate your guest's name in the Comments area of the registration form so we may plan accordingly.

News Bites

PMI salutes its valuable volunteers!

The week of 17-23 April 2005 is National Volunteer Week in the U.S., and PMI would like to take this occasion to say a heartfelt "thank you" to our core of tireless and dedicated volunteers, not just in the U. S., but also in every corner of the globe! Sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation, National Volunteer Week is about reflecting on the power volunteers have to inspire people as well as to inspire others to serve. According to the 2004 PMI Volunteer Satisfaction Survey, 87 percent of respondents volunteer in at least one other non-PMI activity and 66 percent participate in at least two other activities. PMI deeply appreciates your time and countless contributions to the well being of this organization. Together, as volunteers and practitioners, you are helping PMI to achieve its envisioned future: Worldwide, organizations will embrace, value and utilize project management and attribute their success to it.

Promoting PMI and Project Management

Coming soon...the exciting kickoff of PMI's high-profile 2005 global advertising campaign. In an effort to heighten the awareness of PMI marketing efforts among the PMI Component community, be sure to look for the first of many compelling advertisements, one in the 20 April 2005 issue of Financial Times and another in the 16 May 2005 issue for Fortune Magazine. We will then carry our message on the value of project management as indispensable for business results to other highly regarded publications to name a few such as Project Manager Today, Redmond Magazine, and Certification Magazine. Also look for electronic advertising on the Wall Street Journal Online, certcities.com, redmondmag.com, and ALLPM.com. This campaign is an integral part of PMI's commitment to achieving its envisioned goal.

PMI Streamlines the Basic Knowledge Assessment

PMI’s Project Management Basic Knowledge Assessment (BKA) is now easier to use! You no longer have to wait for the link to the assessment to be e-mailed after your payment is processed. For your convenience, a secure server accepts online credit card payments. This means instantaneous approval, and, consequently, immediate and seamless entry into the online assessment.

The BKA, a test comprised of 100-multiple-choice questions, is just one of the many ways PMI helps project managers evaluate their general knowledge of project management practices. Based on the five Project Management Process Groups of the PMBOK® Guide, it enables project managers to determine which of these groups, if any, they may need to brush up on to increase their chances of passing the PMP® Examination, or benefit from the proper application of project management knowledge in the workplace.

Please visit PMI's Web site for more information or to access the BKA. Interested parties can take the assessment for a fee of $35 (US).

Feature Book/Word of the Month

Translating Corporate Strategy into Project Strategy

By: Peter Morris, PhD and Ashley Jamieson, MS

Considered the new "silver bullet" in guiding corporate strategy, Translating Corporate Strategy into Project Strategy, examines how project management tools and principles can be used to effectively advance business strategy. Through case studies from a variety of industries, the authors demonstrate how successful organizations move beyond mission statements and five-year plans to create the processes that are necessary to carry out time-oriented goals and projects. In addition to examining these successes, the authors also identify effective strategy implementation processes, define the relevant terms using the standards of PMI's PMBOK® Guide, outline staff roles and responsibilities, and offer several different models of personnel structure and capabilities that reflect project management principles and methods. Offering a compelling look into yet another way the project management profession is impacting business results, this book is an indispensable tool for business leaders at all levels.

bloviate \BLOH-vee-ayt\ verb

1 : to speak or write verbosely and windily

Example sentence: Maggie liked to turn on the news and watch the media pundits bloviate about the top issues of the day.

Did you know?Warren G. Harding is often linked to "bloviate," but to him the word wasn't insulting; it simply meant "to spend time idly." Harding used the word often in the "hanging around" sense, but during his tenure as the 29th U.S. President (1921-23), he became associated with the "verbose" sense of "bloviate," perhaps because his speeches tended to the long-winded side. Although he is sometimes credited with having coined the word, it's more likely that Harding picked it up from local slang while hanging around with his boyhood buddies in Ohio in the late 1800's. The term probably derives from a combination of the word "blow" plus the suffix "-ate."
