December's Chapter Meeting
Driving Business Growth
presented by Robert J. Frost
Our speaker will be Robert J Frost, of Zimmer Orthopedics.
Mr. Frost's presentation is entitled, "Innovation and R&D Metrics: Most of us know about using metrics to measure on-going operations, but Mr. Frost suggests that organizations should also have metrics to measure innovation.  The life-cycle of each product or service will die out over time unless innovation allows them to "jump the curve".
The meeting will be Wednesday, December 5th at Hall's Guest House on Washington Center Road in Fort Wayne.  Networking begins at 5:30, dinner is served at 6:00, and the presentation begins at 7:00.
Thinking About Getting Certified?
Indiana TechGet more information about professional certification and the job market on the PMI career development page.  To learn more details about the three certifications that PMI offers - CAPM, PMP, and PgMP - explore the PMI credentials page.
Dave Maynard, PMP, the Chapter's VP of Professional Development, will be speaking about the new PgMP credential at the January meeting.
If you're already decided to get one of PMI's certifications, remember that the mandatory 35-hour preparation class can be obtained for $150 through our NEIC Chapter, whether you're a PMI member or not.  Information about this internet-based class is available on our website
Report on LavaCon
Greg McCormick, PMP, the Chapter's Director of Communications, was invited to speak at the 2007 Professional Development Summit, which was held October 27-30 in New Orleans. Here is Greg's report on the conference.
The Summit Conference was co-sponsored by the Greater New Orleans PMI Chapter, and "LavaCon" a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing professional Technical Communications.  There were about 250 attendees and speakers at the three-day event, and there were two dozen vendors represented.
Board Member Profile
Mike Krouse, PMP
Thank you all for allowing me to serve as the VP of Finance for the PMI's Northeast Indiana Chapter since 2004.  The responsibilities of this position include: paying the expenses, depositing event revenue, investing chapter funds, recording all the financial activity in Quicken, and handling all the financial reporting.
After an extensive career in Information Technology at Lincoln Financial Group (LFG), I earned my PMP certification in 2002.  In 2004, I became the manager of the LFG Project Management Office.  The PMO was successful in developing a standard tool kit of templates, processes, and procedures for Lincoln Life and Annuity IT projects.
Early this year, I transitioned from IT to IT Audit, and I am currently the IT Audit Manager for LFG.  In June, I passed the Certified Information Systems Auditor exam (CISA).
I graduated from Purdue University with a BS in Computer Science, and I also have the LOMA FLMI and ACS designations.  I've been married for 21 years, and have 2 children, Matt and Megan.  My wife Lorie is a Kindermusik teacher, and she volunteers her free time at church and school.  Son Matt is a freshman at Ball State University studying Criminal Justice, and is enrolled in the ROTC.  Daugther Megan is a freshman at Homestead HS, and she performs in the show choir.

[editor's note: Mike does a great job of handling our financial affairs, and we all appreciate the quality of his work.]
October 2007 Meeting
Dr. Tim Kroecker, of Cambria Consulting in Boston, was the speaker at our October Chapter meeting.  His presentation was entitled, "From Managing Projects to Leading Programs: Defining and Building Program Leaders."
Tim started his presentation by stating that most projects and programs to falter due to a lack of interpersonal skills cause, and that leadership skills can re-vitalize such initiatives.  Organizations have a business interest in developing program managers, and such managers should be grown within the organization from the project management ranks.  Individuals have a personal interest in acquiring the skills needed to expand their work from individual projects into more extensive programs.
Board Report
The Board of Directors met on Wednesday, November November 14th.  Here's what we're working on:
  • Pat Ruger, VP of Programs, is still working on programs for the meetings through May, and she is open to ideas anyone has.  Also, two Professional Development sessions are planned for 2008.
  • Bob Nichter, Web-Master, reported that our home page now has the Indiana Tech advertisement for the Master's Certificate in ProjMgt, and that a reminder will be posted about the Election of Board Members.
  • McAfee software has scanned our Chapter website and its newsletters, and has determined that emails from us are not spam, so we can be sure that announcements of our activities will reach the intended audience
  • The 2008 schedule for meetings, flyers, and newsletters was reviewed
  • The language in the meeting RSVP has been clarified regarding members and guests
  • As year-end approaches, the Board is identifying any outstanding bills and making arrangements to get those paid, and has begun planning the Chapter budget for next year.
  • Dave Maynard, VP of Professional Development, has created a draft of the Chapter Handbook that will assist Board members in understanding and executing their duties; the Handbook will be consistent with the PMI template for By-Laws.
  • Dave also announced his plans to create new internet-based training, including a PgMP class and other sessions that would grant PDUs.
  • The next Board meeting is December 12th, at Lincoln, from 5:30 to 6:30.
